This is the view of the Six Feet Under Pub and Fish House in Cabbagetown, a neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia. Actually, I should be more specific. It’s the view of Six Feet Under from inside the gates of Oakland Cemetery. That’s right. There is a grave-themed restaurant and bar just outside of a graveyard. And as convenient and insensitive as the title may seem, it’s actually pretty representative of the tone of the cemetery, and Cabbagetown in general.
You see, Oakland Cemetery is more of a landmark and tourist attraction than it is a morose grave site. It’s spotted with historic and somewhat famous graves, including the likes of Margaret Mitchell. People go to this cemetery to lounge, enjoy good landscaping, walk their dogs, and more. So it shouldn’t be so surprising that the name of the bar across the street is somewhat tongue in cheek.
It’s a funny, albeit unique, idea to create such a food establishment, but it does exist, and it’s very much real. So, now you may be wondering what you can expect when you go to Six Feet Under. Here are the details.
Six Feet Under has a variety of food and drink options. Given that it’s a pub, you can expect fresh fish and shellfish options, as well as many choices when it comes to sandwiches, soups and more. They also have raw bar options, like specialty oysters and Gulf oysters. If you like that, you’ll like their shrimp cocktail, too.
Fans of shellfish will love their choices. You can indulge in a half-pound basket of Peel n’ Eat Shrimp, or you can go with their specialty Curry Shrimp and Mussels dish. If you’re more of a crab fan, you’re in luck. You have the choice of King or Snow Crab Legs, and classic seafood favorite sides, like hush puppies! And remember, you are in the South, so be prepared for an assortment of southern seafood boils.
And if you’re looking to wind down, rather than indulge your taste buds, you must take advantage of the rooftop bar! This is a local favorite. And for beer geeks, you get to choose from tons of draft beer and IPA options. Cocktails, wine, and mixed drinks are available, as well.
So, now that we’ve covered the menu, let’s talk about the view. People love that rooftop bar for a reason. It’s just a nice chance to get out of the traditional consumer setting in restaurants. You have the opportunity to not be crowded into a table setting, and you can actually look out across the street at the views that Oakland Cemetery provides!
And with all the beautiful botanical work that is put into the cemetery, the view you get is optimal at sunset. If you can set aside the fact that your eating and being merry so close to a grave yard, then you’ll love Six Feet Under. It doesn’t have to be cringy or weird. And in fact, it’s a unique aspect of the establishment that sets it apart from the bustling, sleek, and modern taste of restaurants and bars that you’ll find if you travel closer to say, Midtown.
This establishment is definitely not off the beaten path It makes a nice stop after strolling through Oakland Cemetery and appreciating the beauty of the natural world. You can cool off from the drenching Georgia heat, sit and relax in the shade, have a refreshing drink, and obviously, enjoy your time with friends or family! This is one stop in Cabbagetown you have to make.
