With a fork in one hand and a pen in the other let’s dive in: Wagner’s Farm Market

Now that the holiday season has come and gone, life can seemingly go back to normal, right? Well, part of this normalcy includes venturing out to local restaurants and bars to write reviews. This week I chose to review Wagner’s Farm Market.

Wagner’s Farm Market is a family-owned business here in the Western New York area. They are located at 2672 Lockport Road in Sanborn NY. This business has been up and running for more than 50 years! My family and I have driven past this local business hundreds of times in the last 20 years. Today we decided to go in.

The atmosphere at Wagner’s Farm Market

The atmosphere at Wagner’s was very quaint, clean, and homey. The farm and country decor were simple but appropriate to the setting. Walking through the door of the restaurant portion of the business, you will be greeted by friendly behind the counter staff and any local patrons that may be enjoying a nice meal. This restaurant is definitely a local hang out for loyal customers in the area.

The chairs, tables, and booths were all clean and well kept. The Wagner family pride in their business certainly shows!

The atmosphere in the farmers market was just as clean and well kept! There is an easy access door that connects the two sides of the Wagner’s business which is very helpful to their customers.

Entering the market portion you are greeted by the cashier and shopping locals. The main room is filled with various stands holding fruits, vegetables, baked goods, and much more (most of which is locally grown or made). There are coolers on the back and sidewalls of the main room which have a deli cooler, a meat cooler, beverages, cheese, and other chilled goods that are also mostly locally grown or made.

Overall, the atmosphere at Wagner’s Farm Market is welcoming, kind, and warm.

The food at Wagner’s Farm Market

We started out having lunch in the restaurant portion of the business. I ordered the beer-battered fish fry with French fries, coleslaw, and a roll. My mom ordered the chicken gyro which had tomatoes, feta cheese, cucumber sauce, and lettuce on it. My son was lucky enough to find the “free” barrel of apples at the back of the farmers market. He was then able to enjoy his free apple and shared some of my lunch as well.

I have had quite a few beer-battered fish dinners in my lifetime and very few are truly noteworthy. The number one fish fry in our area always seems to come from the Wilson Fire Hall around Lent. However, I have to admit that this fish fry dinner was a solid second! The fish was perfectly cooked, tender on the inside, crispy on the outside. The flavor was not overwhelming but rather spot on! the grease did not drip out or make the breading soggy which can become a big problem with fish fry dinners.

The fries came out very hot and nicely cooked, though they could have used another minute or two. They also were under-seasoned for my taste but my son enjoyed them once they cooled.

My mom’s gyro seemed very large and packed full of tasty ingredients. Though she was underwhelmed by the lack of seasoning it contained. I was able to taste a piece of chicken from it. I admit that the chicken was tender and not too dry, though very underseasoned.

The food from the market mostly seemed fresh and fairly priced. I picked up a head of broccoli, Brussels sprouts, baby carrots, zucchini, a sack of red potatoes and some bananas.

My final recommendation

I would definitely recommend Wagner’s Farm Market for a meal or for produce shopping. Both sections of this establishment are taken care of with pride and run by kind, caring locals. I would love to return again in the future and try other menu items as well as pick up some more produce. I believe that local businesses deserve our patronage and attention. Without it, they likely won’t survive another 50 years. Shop and eat local and if you’re in the Western New York area, stop by Wagner’s!
