0

No matter where are we from chocolate, especially hot chocolate is one of the best drinks, especially when we are feeling down or when the weather is cold. In fact, Cocoa is one magical ingredient beneficial for our health. It is an elixir that boosts mood by reducing anxiety and stress.

Here is one interesting fact: in 600 B.C. the Mesoamerican civilization used drinkable chocolate for medicine purposes. Then what can cocoa be good for aside from mood booster?

While there are many variations of hot chocolate, mixing with other ingredients, hot chocolate alone is a health booster that you must consider adding into your meal plan. The best part is that can be easily added to many different diets even if you are trying to lose weight.

Benefits of Hot Chocolate

1. Aphrodisiac

Every drink or just plain chocolate made from high quality and organic cocoa has the powder to increase the libido, especially in women.

2.  High in Minerals and Vitamins

Dark cocoa is filled with iron, magnesium, copper, potassium and many other important minerals and vitamins. These protect us from anemia, heart problems and type 2 diabetes.

3. Protects our Skin

Your hot chocolate is filled with flavonoids that increase the hydration of our skin. These also absorb the UV light that is harmful to us and it protects from cancer and is recommended for safe sunning.

4. Strengthens Teeth

Tannis, found in coca has oxalic acid. This is important because it lowers the acid production and this reduces the growth of plaque. This prevents decay of the teeth but of course if you continue with daily dental hygiene. Plus it contains theobromine, which helps with preventing discoloration and hardens enamel.

5. Weight management

Yes, really! Hot chocolate helps you lose and maintain weight! How? If you have hot chocolate 20 minutes before or 5 minutes after your meal it will reduce your appetite by even 50%. The key is moderation. Drinking hot chocolate it decreases appetite because it prevents spikes the insulin levels and this keeps the body’s ability to burn fat going strong.

6. Uplifting

This tasty beverage helps fight depression, anxiety, and stress. Here serotonin plays an important role because it is an anti-depressant. It triggers the creation of endorphins and this increases the feeling of pleasure. In addition, the high levels of antioxidants are amazing because it calms down the stress hormones. While dark chocolate alone has these benefits hot chocolate increases those. The reason here is the heat. It releases more antioxidants.

Choosing health-boosting ingredients for your hot chocolate

Alone hot chocolate is healthy for our overall health. However, if we add even just one ingredient we can get even stronger elixir. So, here are a few hot chocolate variations that you must consider trying:

Cinnamon

Adding cinnamon not only will give a wonderfully unique flavor to the cocoa, but it also helps fight cold and it makes the perfect drink for winter. It lowers blood pressure, lowers the chance to heart disease and it is rich in antioxidants. The high antioxidants levels even outrank the “superfoods” like oregano and garlic.

Peppermint

Peppermint is the hybrid of spearmint in watermint and it is known for its benefits for fighting flu, cold, headaches, nausea, and IBS – irritable bowel syndrome.

Tahini

Tahini is a paste made from sesame seed, a butter. This will give the hot chocolate a creamy texture and makes it even more delicious. On the other side, it is rich in omega-3

So, have a glass of hot chocolate with a good selection of Cocoa and feel the difference. You will instantly feel more energetic, happier and in the long run, you will be healthier. Now you have the best excuse to drink hot cocoa every single day.

This Bar is a Pun on Graveyards… and It’s Also Across the Street from One

0
Six Feet Under

This is the view of the Six Feet Under Pub and Fish House in Cabbagetown, a neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia. Actually, I should be more specific. It’s the view of Six Feet Under from inside the gates of Oakland Cemetery. That’s right. There is a grave-themed restaurant and bar just outside of a graveyard. And as convenient and insensitive as the title may seem, it’s actually pretty representative of the tone of the cemetery, and Cabbagetown in general.

You see, Oakland Cemetery is more of a landmark and tourist attraction than it is a morose grave site. It’s spotted with historic and somewhat famous graves, including the likes of Margaret Mitchell. People go to this cemetery to lounge, enjoy good landscaping, walk their dogs, and more. So it shouldn’t be so surprising that the name of the bar across the street is somewhat tongue in cheek.

Six feet under
Image c/o Hannah Wyatt

It’s a funny, albeit unique, idea to create such a food establishment, but it does exist, and it’s very much real. So, now you may be wondering what you can expect when you go to Six Feet Under. Here are the details.

Six Feet Under has a variety of food and drink options. Given that it’s a pub, you can expect fresh fish and shellfish options, as well as many choices when it comes to sandwiches, soups and more. They also have raw bar options, like specialty oysters and Gulf oysters. If you like that, you’ll like their shrimp cocktail, too.

Fans of shellfish will love their choices. You can indulge in a half-pound basket of Peel n’ Eat Shrimp, or you can go with their specialty Curry Shrimp and Mussels dish. If you’re more of a crab fan, you’re in luck. You have the choice of King or Snow Crab Legs, and classic seafood favorite sides, like hush puppies! And remember, you are in the South, so be prepared for an assortment of southern seafood boils.

And if you’re looking to wind down, rather than indulge your taste buds, you must take advantage of the rooftop bar! This is a local favorite. And for beer geeks, you get to choose from tons of draft beer and IPA options. Cocktails, wine, and mixed drinks are available, as well.

So, now that we’ve covered the menu, let’s talk about the view. People love that rooftop bar for a reason. It’s just a nice chance to get out of the traditional consumer setting in restaurants. You have the opportunity to not be crowded into a table setting, and you can actually look out across the street at the views that Oakland Cemetery provides!

And with all the beautiful botanical work that is put into the cemetery, the view you get is optimal at sunset. If you can set aside the fact that your eating and being merry so close to a grave yard, then you’ll love Six Feet Under. It doesn’t have to be cringy or weird. And in fact, it’s a unique aspect of the establishment that sets it apart from the bustling, sleek, and modern taste of restaurants and bars that you’ll find if you travel closer to say, Midtown.

This establishment is definitely not off the beaten path It makes a nice stop after strolling through Oakland Cemetery and appreciating the beauty of the natural world. You can cool off from the drenching Georgia heat, sit and relax in the shade, have a refreshing drink, and obviously, enjoy your time with friends or family! This is one stop in Cabbagetown you have to make.

Four Foodie Festivals You Need to Hit in Pittsburgh this Summer

0
Pittsburgh

I’m a firm believer that summer is the best season for trying new things. I personally feel my best in the summer, and because of that, I find myself branching out and experiencing things in the warmer months that I normally wouldn’t consider. And these habits face no exception when it comes to food.

I get most of my traveling done in the summer, and that’s when I make a point to makes reservations at or stop into new restaurants. While you might not have the time or money to hit multiple cities on a road trip, you can hit many spots in a single city. Some cities actually have cultural or event boards. These organizations plan and conduct festivals throughout the summer that are usually open to the public, but sometimes require entry fees.

One of my favorite places to experience new food and drink is Pittsburgh, a city that offers so much to do and see without the chaos of places like Manhattan. There are so many festivals and food-related events in Pittsburgh throughout the summer, if you missed half of them, you’d still probably find time in a busy schedule to go to a few.

So, for those who consider themselves foodies or restaurant connoisseurs, brace yourselves. I’m going to recommend four of the most popular food-related Pittsburgh festivals that you can conquer in the span of a summer.

At once coined “The Destination for all Things Pickled” and advertising a weekend of pickle-related tastings and events, you won’t want to miss Picklesburgh. This yearly event takes place each summer and is put together by the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership. It’s earned the rating of America’s #1 Specialty Food Festival. And if that’s not enough to get you interested, maybe it’s location will. This festival has a really unique venue. In fact, they close off the Roberto Clemente Bridge and host all of the events on it! You can expect specialty pickled products, pickle-related contests, and how-to demonstrations for pickling practices. Admission is free to the public.
  • Pittsburgh Pierogi Festival: September 22, 2019
If one place is crazy about its pierogis, it’s Pittsburgh, PA. Not only does Pittsburgh host many culturally diverse populations, such as a Polish American population; a lot of Pittsburgh events are pierogi-themed. You could say this potato and onion stuffed delicacy is beloved there. They Pittsburgh Pirates even have pierogi mascots run around the field for viewer entertainment during baseball games! This year, the Pittsburgh Pierogi Festival will occur at Kennywood Park and will last from 1-6pm. You can expect freshly cooked, homemade pierogis and a lot of fun! Tickets range from about $10-$24, so you will want to think about that in advance.
  • Pittsburgh Little Italy Days: August 15-August 18, 2019
Pittsburgh’s Little Italy Days occurs each year and represents the region’s largest Italian heritage festival. There’s a large Italian American population and history in Pittsburgh, so this festival is a great opportunity to celebrate. The festival takes place in Bloomfield and will host Italian musical acts, bocce ball games, and of course, delicious Italian foods. Admission is free, so put this on your list!
  • Pittsburgh Irish Festival: September 6-September 8, 2019
The last festival on this list is everything Irish. There’s also a rich Irish American heritage in the city of Pittsburgh. Some of the greatest American dishes to have.

Hot Dog

Whether you’ve been stuck under a rock or just found your way from the depths of the ocean, you must know that American dishes stand up top at the pinnacle of finger licking wonders. Ok, you can have an exception if you aren’t a native of this region, but regardless, you must have tasted one, if not all of the dishes I’m about to present to you.

Burger.

SOURCE:Pixabay

This tops the list due to its never-ending satisfaction and forever dominant presence in just about every eatery you can come across in the present world. Ok not to get carried away but if you haven’t had a burger, I strongly suggest you have one on completing this article, please, I beg of you, thanks.

Burgers come in all forms and have been experimented on over the years to such lengths that they sometimes don’t even look like what they are anymore. Lunch counter, McDonald’s, Burger King, Steak N Shake, In-N-Out, Whataburger, The heart attack grill… No matter where you look, it just seems that there’s a joint where you can get a hold of this wonderful works of art to drive your taste buds bunkers

Hotdogs.

SOURCE:Pixabay

As the saying goes, nothing complements a game quite like a hot dog. That saying deserves a gold star on Wall Street trust me from what I’ve come to find out.

Considering its nature and just how amazing it goes with mustard, or what every cream you have a flair for is quite baffling if you ask me.

Hot dogs have become a mainstay in the American dish ranking ever since the 1916 eating competitions held in its name. We owe a debt to Frankfurt Germany and of cause Mr. Charles Feltman for bringing this awesome meal to our doorsteps.

Philly cheese steak.

Popular for its juicy take into the beef craft, this amazing wonder of the world is so amazing that it has its own proclaimed stance. Yes, no kidding, a meal developed by the locals of Philadelphia and made of frizzled beef, chopped up while being grilled in cheese, this meal would leave you drooling and definitely in the signature stance, “the Philadelphia Lean.”

N.B best experienced in person.

The Philly cheese stake gets its well renowned greasy feel from onions and cheese which is laid into a long locally made Amoroso bun.

Ever since they were first made by Pat and Harry Olivieri, this dish has become a cult favorite and is served in just any diner you pass by.

Nachos.

Making our list of cause are nachos. Nothing comes close to this dense calorie meal best accompanied to a pitcher of margaritas.

Just across the border, in good old Mexico is where this piece originated from. Named after its creator, Ignacio “Nacho” Anya, surprisingly was developed as a quick rustle meal to satisfy customers within closing hours, and from there it’s gone across the borders, so far to even become a house meal in some homes with families having their special recipes.

Pizza.

The legend goes that in 1943, a visionary named Ike Sewell open the Uno’s Pizzeria in Chicago with the idea of revolutionizing pizza which was originally a snack into a more reformed dish.

He and his chef Rudy Malnati working handing in hand developed the first masterpiece by stuffing and piling the pizza high, with a tall buttery crust, lots of meat, cheese, tomato chunks and Italian spices, my God I wish I were present to experience their revolutional cuisine.

Bringing Fandoms to Life: Recipes from Fiction

0
Game of Thrones

Something that my wife and I have always talked about doing is making a whole day’s worth of snacks and meals using recipes from all of our favorite books, movies, television shows, and video games. What I have compiled down below is just a handful of the recipes we’d use along with some that I cannot wait to attempt! There are a great number of recipes that I will not have covered here, so please feel free to share any recipes from your favorite fictional world in the comments down below.

Lemon Cakes (Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire)

One of my wife and I’s favorite television shows is Game of Thrones. Sunday nights are always our favorite when GoT is on, and we have both read through the books as well! Sansa Stark, one of my wife’s favorite characters, is rather fond of lemon cakes which is why we are excited to try baking them! If prepared and baked properly, the end result should be a spongy, light cake with just the right amount of lemon!

Bantha Milk (Star Wars)

The Star Wars franchise has given generations of people the perfect picture of what a fantasy epic in a faraway galaxy looks like. With the vast scope of such a well-fleshed out universe, I have personally always wondered what the food and drink was like in such a unique setting. Thankfully I was able to find a recipe for Bantha milk, which was shown briefly for the first time in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. This blue milk is not just milk with blue food coloring, but it can actually make for a nice, refreshing drink!

Find the recipe for Bantha milk here

Sea-Salt Ice Cream (Kingdom Hearts)

The Kingdom Hearts series is, without a doubt, my wife’s absolute favorite series of video games. Introduced in Kingdom Hearts II, sea-salt ice cream has been mentioned or featured in each subsequent Kingdom Hearts game since then. This recipe is a little more simple than others you may find elsewhere, but this recipe calls for more accessible and inexpensive ingredients than in other recipes.

Get the recipe for Sea-Salt ice cream here

Lembas Bread (Lord of the Rings)

The Lord of the Rings is my favorite book/movie series of all time! I have yet to make lembas bread, and I must say that this recipe makes me all the more excited to try it out! Lembas bread, or waybread, was given to Frodo and the Fellowship as they departed from Lothlorien and they used it all the way to Mordor! Different from cram, lembas bread is more flavorful while still being just as filling. This is a perfect snack for a hiking trip, as long as you bring a bottle of water or two as well. I definitely plan on trying this out in the near future!

The recipe for Sea-Salt ice cream can be found here

Kronk’s Spinach Puffs (The Emperor’s New Groove)

When I had first seen The Emperor’s New Groove, the dinner scene featuring Kronk’s spinach puffs always made me laugh. As I got older, I found myself more and mor curious about the spinach puffs each time I watched the movie. Thankfully, I was able to find this recipe! The finished product of this recipe sure seems as close to the movie representation as possible. As a side note, any of the leftover spinach mixture from these puffs can be used as a dip!

Get the recipe for Kronk’s spinach puffs here

Nuka-Cola Quantum (Fallout)

Fallout is one of my favorite sets of video games, not just because of the game itself but because of the unique, post-apocalyptic food and drink that can be found within the game. One such drink that can be found in the Fallout universe is Nuka-Cola Quantum. Whereas thein-game version of Nuka-Cola Quantum would be more like a soda, this recipes turns this wastelander’s drink into more of an alcoholic beverage. After having one of these drinks, that edge will definitely be taken off seeing as the recipe calls for both rum and vodka.

You can find the recipe for Nuka-Cola Quantum here

I am so excited to try out all of these recipes! I do not own any of the previously listed recipes, but please feel free to try them out and tell me how they turned out!

My Father’s Recipe For “Selsko Meso”

0
Selsko Meso

The one and only dish that I can’t say “no” to even If I have eaten before is “Selso Meso”. But when my father makes it. Yes, it is special, and he always brags about it by saying that it is cooked for 7 hours and eaten in 7 minutes. Well, this is true. This recipe needs love and patient and not just the right ingredients.  But because it requires 7 hours to be cooked he makes it when he has a free day. He is the best because he shares his recipe with everyone but when he cooks no one should even stir.

When I go to his place I always hope that there are leftovers or I ask him to make it before I come. I love it when the aroma is spread in the house, and you just can’t eat anything else because you are desperately waiting for 7 hours to be done. But it is all worth it.

Now I make it for my kids and my husband and they enjoy it too. But I feel like everyone should have this recipe and taste just one small but important part of our Macedonian cuisine.

Selsko Meso

Ingredients:

  • 2 lb. / 1 kg. Boneless Pork Ribs
  • ½ lb. / 200 grams Onion, chopped
  • 1lb. / 400 grams Mushrooms
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Salt and Black pepper to taste
  • “Vegeta” Seasoning (optional and if you can find it but it gives an amazing flavor to the meat)
  • 1tsp. Red Pepper

Side Dish:

  • 10 Banana Peppers (sweet)
  • 4 Spicy green Peppers
  • 4 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 1 cup Parsley, chopped
  • Apple Cider Vinegar
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Salt
  • 1 cup Cheese, grated

Directions:

1. The first thing that you need to do is cut the meat into squares. Turn on medium-high heat. Drizzle with vegetable oil and fry the meat just for 10 minutes to get a good golden brown color. At this point, you can add “Vegeta” (2-3 minutes before you’re are finished frying) 1 tsp.

2. Now add about 1 cup water, just to cover the meat and close the lid. Lower the heat to a low and let it cook for 3-5 hours checking from time to time to make sure that there is still juice so it doesn’t stick to the bottom.

3. 30 Minutes before the meat is done preheat the oven to 400F/200C, chop the onion and the mushrooms. In a skillet over medium drizzle oil and fry the onion for 10 minutes. Once done transfer it in a plate.

4. In the same skillet add the mushrooms and cook them for 10 minutes, add more oil if needed. Set the skillet aside and add 1 tsp. red pepper and start stirring until well coated.

5. Now add the onion and the mushrooms in the pot with the meat and season with black pepper and salt to taste. Stir. Let it simmer for 10 minutes

6. Transfer it in a baking dish, preferably in a clay baking dish, but if you don’t have you can make it in a regular deep baking dish.  Place it in the oven and let it cook for 30min-1 hour. 10 Minutes before it is done baking top with grated cheese.

Side Dish:

1. Clean the peppers with a damp cloth and place them directly on the stove. You can do this with gas and electric stove just make sure that if you are using a gas stove that it is turn on to a minimum. Let them cook on all sides and place them in a plastic bag or a plastic container. Close well so that they can be easier to peel. Let them sit for 30 minutes and peel.

2. Separate the spicy and sweet pepper in two different deep plates and drizzle both with olive oil and vinegar. Season with salt.

3. Chop the garlic and parsley. Add them over the peppers and toss (in both sweet and spicy),

4. Serve the “Selsko Meso” with the peppers on the side and enjoy! Don’t forget a nice bread that you can dip in the pepper sauce and the meat sauce too. Trust me, you won’t be able to stop eating.

Notes:

– It might seem that the dish is too oily but in fact, that is the sauce and what it makes it special. If you want you can place the mushrooms and the onion on a paper towel before adding them in the meat. This is all up to you.

– The longer it takes to make it more flavorful it will be.

– If you can’t find “Vegeta” in your regular store I think you can order it online in the popular online stores. Well, if you really want to taste it. No worries, you won’t be using it just for this dish. It is great for seasoning soups and stews too.

– This recipe serves 4-6 people, depending on the serving size.

Now, just make sure that if you are making it for guests to double the recipes because everyone will be so over it.

A Brief History of the Lobster…Should You Really Be Paying that Much?

0
Lobster

There’s probably little you could do to convince lovers of lobster that what they’re eating isn’t actually a delicacy worth spending $20-$30 on at a restaurant. Because of its current status as a tender, succulent crustacean meat served on some of the most expensive columns of certain menus, people think it’s worthy.

And don’t get me wrong, lobster is great. I love a dish of buttery, melt-in-your-mouth lobster paired with something else savory. I myself was certainly fooled into believing the myth of its value growing up. But, unfortunately, like many things on the consumer market, we’re often mistaken of the true value of what we buy and consume.

Lobster’s History

It may shock many people to know that lobster is actually an easily attainable creature for serving as food. In fact, it’s so easily attainable that at one point, it was commonly gathered and served as food for prison inmates. Because many crustaceans are essentially bottom feeders, lobsters were seen as an adequate food choice pairing for breakers of the law. They were considered the lowest of the low in the bottom of the ocean. And thus, I assume they seemed less valuable.

Lobster
SOURCE: Pixabay

I first learned about the lobster’s history several years back when I read David Foster Wallace’s essay “Consider the Lobster”, which is a feature article about the Maine Lobster Festival from Gourmet Magazine. When this article came out, it was supposed to be a descriptive article on the festival that would show readers what the events entailed. What resulted, however was more of an expose on the truth of how lobster isn’t actually very special, based on its history. It was also a look into the ethical or possibly unethical nature of cooking lobster while it’s still alive.

But what I am curious about is how the lobster came to be seen as food for poor men, slaves, and prisoners in colonial times. Apparently, they were even used as fish bait by Native Americans in the 18th century. And despite being relatively healthy to eat, they were seen as a surplus food that shouldn’t be given much value on the market.

Thus, it seems near crazy now to think that lobster is a delicacy people often think of ordering if they only had the money available. My understanding is that people eventually realized that when given careful preparation, these creatures taste delicious. Perhaps someone had the idea of marketing them under the façade of a greater value. Maybe someone really business savvy had a hunch they would do well if catered to the rich and elite. Economies work in weird ways like that, and if people believe that they deserve something valuable, they tend to buy things that they’re told are valuable.

So, did you imagine that the lobster you’ve eaten was once so abundant in New England that it washed up on shores in piles? I think that, if we really took the time to think about it, we might be surprised by how many foods we pay more than we should for. Cattle are mass-farmed and beefed up with gross things like steroids, yet we can still go to a chain restaurant and pay nearly $20 for a large steak. Coffee beans are farmed in mass, yet we can go to a coffee shop and pay nearly $5 for an espresso drink. The list goes on and on.

It’s not likely that this kind of market ebb and flow will change just because of consumers’ awareness of it. but unfortunately, that’s how a capitalist market works. I still stand with my opinion that lobster is delicious. So, who knows? Maybe it is worth it.

Learning how to cook.

Cooking

Food, food, food, nothing brings a better chill down my spine when presented with an amazing dish with scintillating aroma, great taste and that melting feel when placed in your mouth, the happiness of chewing, and then gulping down and feeling your farfetched desire has been accomplished only to notice that you have a plate full of that experience. However you look at it, be you a vegetarian, or beef lover, food is not only a vital part of life in overall terms. “yes, you don’t eat, and you die, It’s  that simple”, but also can be art, a profession, science and even go as far as being a fundamental block of an economy, “just ask the rice farmers”.

Ok, people often have the perspective of eating just for the sake of eating, well that’s also very wrong. Your body is a temple, and as such needs to be filled, nurtured and taken care of in the right manner. You need to eat not just good but great meals and not stop there, you need to exercise regularly, keep fit and carry out regular checkups on your body.

So now there comes another question, how do you get great meals that would suit your bodies nutrient needs. Well people often result to eateries, fast foods or in general simply eat out, well this is ok to some length but what happens when you’ve tried everything and don’t get satisfied with them anymore?

Well, this is when the thought of you creating your own meal often comes in.

According to statistics, 1 in 3 university students have no idea of how to boil an egg. This alarming statistic doesn’t end there. Also, there is the belief that about 48% of students can’t make a simple spaghetti.

Well if you fall into this category and are willing to Pull out of it, then read further as I inform you on how to start learning to cook for yourself.

Cooking is a skill, and just like any other skill, it is best practiced with several tools. In cooking terms, we call them utensils and include, pots, spoons, spatulas, whisks, mixing bowls, cutting boards, graters, and knives to name a few. All of these tools can be gotten from your local vendor.

Kitchen.

Setting up yourkitchen cannot be overstated in this context, your kitchen is going to be the home of your meals, so it’s best to have a setup that is convenient and easy for you navigate easily. You need the fanciest setup out there, just something that you can work with easily with the basics of an oven, sink and fridge.

Grocery
SOURCE : Pixabay

Groceries.

Well, it’s a no brainer that you would need ingredients that would up the dish you set out to make. Getting groceries is a necessity and should be done accordingly. You can start up by making a list of what you need, milk, eggs, juice are the basics, but you also need to get what you would need to prepare the dish you set out to. I advise you to stock your fridge as much as possible, as you probably wouldn’t want to go through the stress of visiting the market now and then.

So once you have your kitchen setup, you proceed into researching on various cooking recipes that catch your interest. This might be a little tricky as there are thousands for you to choose from. A great start would be trying to prepare your favorite dish as you are more likely to keep trying even after numerous failed attempts.

Having all of the above is a route to success in the kitchen, but you should know that like any skill, cooking needs training and brushing up before it can become polished.

The Best Macedonian Desserts

0

Macedonian cuisine is not only rich with meals but also desserts. Yes, you can find so many different ones that you won’t be able to try them if you are visiting just for a few days. This is because most of them are very sweet and only one piece will do the job and you won’t be able to take another bite.

While I am more into chocolate-based cakes and cookies I still can’t say no when I see baklava, pufki/celufki (depending on the city), and crepes. Even though they are sweet and a lot of sugar is used to make most of the Macedonian desserts, each home makes and eats them without thinking too much about weight, especially for the holidays. The holidays are always the best excuse to make a great traditional dessert.

Luckily, there are candy shops and restaurants where you can buy them every single day and you will get them made by the original recipe. You can also find them in stores and even though they are good they are not that good when bought from a candy shop or made at home.

The Best Macedonian Desserts

1. Baklava

Baklava
Baklava

Let me start with Baklava. This is a dessert pastry that was brought in Macedonian during the Ottoman Empire. Since then it becomes our traditional dessert too. It made from layers of pastry that once assembled with one type of nuts usually walnuts, hazelnuts, or pistachios or a mix of them it is covered with sherbet (a syrup made from sugar and water). The end result is amazing, sweet, rich and the top layer crispy. Magical!

2. Gurabii (cookies)

Gurabii
Gurabii (cookies)

If you open up the recipe books in Macedonian’s homes you will definitely find Gurabii in every single one. These are one of the easiest, delicious and mouth-melting type of cookies that go perfectly with coffee or as a quick bite when you are too hungry to wait for lunch or dinner. These are made from a simple dough and the inside of these cookies are filled with walnuts, just a little bit of cinnamon and sugar.

3. Ekleri (Eclairs)

ekleri
Ekleri

I can’t take my mind off the image when my mother made these for me. I remember that it was a very delicate job, especially when baking the dough. You really needed experience in order to make them. I was always curious about cooking and baking and I will never forget when my mum would say “ Don’t Open the Oven!”. This phrase was even used when I was just looking at how they were baking. Everyone was very careful when these precious Eclairs were made. Once cooled they were cut in half and filled with delicious cream. You can find them everywhere in restaurants, candy shops, stores or even buy the baked dough and fill them yourself but there are not like the homemade ones.

4. Apple Pie or Lazy Pie

Lazy Pie
Lazy Pie

Why lazy? Because it is ideal when you don’t have a lot of time or you just feel lazy to cook but you are craving something sweet and delicious. Plus it is the best pie ever thanks to the apples that grow in Macedonia.

5. Preserve – Green Figs

Green Figs
Green Figs

I am not that into fruit preserves because they are too sweet for my taste but when it comes to green figs preserve I just must have one. Yes, only one, they are too sweet. But what I most like is the syrup and it goes perfectly with crepes.

6. Pufki/Celufki (kisses)

Celufki
Celufki

These are cookies as white as the snow. One of the many recipes that take me back when I was a child is “pufki” especially when my mom made them and how my sister just couldn’t wait to eat them. I like them but not as much as my sister. They are very delicate to make and are made from egg whites, vinegar, and sugar. Even though there are only three ingredients used it takes patience and practice in order to make and bake them. Not everyone can make the perfect ones, I still need some practice too.

I can go on and on but for now, I think these 6 desserts are enough to show you just one small part of the dessert world in Macedonia. There are more like “Tulumba”, “sweet bread”, “tatlija”, “kadaif”, etc. More about them in another time.

Now don’t forget; if you truly want to taste the best dessert make sure that they are homemade. This is the best way to taste what Macedonian Desserts are all about.

Exotic Foods to Be Wary Of

Exotic Foods

I like to consider myself an adventurous eater. I am always open to trying new or exotic foods that people normally would not want anywhere near their plate. Just like my wish to travel abroad to try different types of street food, I would love to travel outside of the country to find the most exotic and off-the-wall foods possible. One of the biggest precautions to take, however, is making sure that any and all food being consumed is prepared and cooked properly. If not, the result could be sever illness or even death! With that being said, I now present to you a list of some of the most exotic foods that you could eat that can be detrimental to your health if not prepared correctly as previously stated.

Exotic Foods to Be Wary Of

Pufferfish

Pufferfish, or fugu as it is called in Japan, is one of the many exotic foods from around the world that sits close to the top of everyone’s list. The meat of a pufferfish is extremely light and is considered a delicacy. However, one bust me certified and licensed to prepare/cook using pufferfish because it is highly toxic if it is not thoroughly cooked. The toxin in the meat of the pufferfish is considerably more deadly than cyanide, and it continues to be the cause for roughly fifty people a year being hospitalized. There is currently no known antidote to the toxin in pufferfish, which further enforces the fact that pufferfish is one of the most dangerous exotic foods today.

Scorpionfish

The Scorpionfish is similar to the pufferfish in the sense that consuming the meat of this fish can cause some serious side effects if not prepared correctly. Scorpionfish are not normally as common as other commercial fish species, so it truly is a treat whenever they can be caught! While not as toxic as the pufferfish, the sting that you could receive from one of the spinal barbs while cleaning the fish can result in some nasty swelling and in some severe cases, partial paralysis!

Blood Clams

Blood clams are not all that different from other clams in the way that they are cooked or made ready to eat, but the hazards that come from not cooking or eating them properly are not to be taken lightly. Typhoid and dysentery have been known to be found in blood clams, as well as hepatitis A and E. People are continuously infected by blood clams every year, making them an exotic food to definitely watch out for.

Casu Marzu

This is something I am confident in saying I would never try. All of the items on this list are items I truly would like to try with the exception of this one. I added Casu Marzu to the list because this seems like an exotic food that only the bravest of the brave would tackle. Casu Marzu is a type of cheese that is left out uncovered, allowing it to rot very quickly. Because of the rotting of the cheese, flies are then able to land and lay their eggs inside the cheese.

Unusual cheese

These eggs then hatch, which release maggots inside the cheese that cause the cheese to ferment. This cheese is typically eaten while the maggots are still inside the cheese. One of the dangers of eating Casu Marzu is that sometimes, the maggots can leap out of the cheese and onto the person eating. There is also the risk of ingesting some of these live maggots, which can latch on and bore through intestinal walls. Like I said, I would not be one to try this cheese, but it is eaten at the dinner table in some countries and it is definitely one of the more exotic/extreme choices out there!

Monkey Brains

Not to be confused with the delicious sweet bread, actual monkey brains are another food for the most extreme of eaters. I would try monkey brains if they were cooked well enough, but I would probably just have them one time and in a smaller portion. Like the rest of the foods on this list, proper cooking techniques and moderate portions are crucial to be as safe as possible when eating these. Monkey brains are available to the market primarily in Asia, and then can be eaten either raw, baked, or cooked as you would with regular meat. The biggest health risk with eating monkey brains is that they can turn your brain into mush and cause Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and in the most severe cases eating monkey brains can cause death.

These foods are just a few entries of a long list of exotic and equally dangerous foods from around the world. I would love to travel to some of these locations and try the cuisine someday! I look forward to hearing about any foods that did not make it in the list!
