The Mezzes Amazed Me

In Washington, DC, there are several excellent Mediterranean restaurants, but none compare to Zaytinya. At 701 9th St NW, Washington, District of Columbia, USA, Chef José Andrés and his team have built and refined a distinct and distinctive style inspired by Greek, Turkish, and Lebanese cuisines.

The mezzes here are to die for! Huge portions on tiny plates! The venue is ideal for group lunches and dinners because you are allowed to share. The softness of the lamb will transport you to heaven if you sample the Hünkar Beendi!

The Chef’s Choice tasting menu, on the other hand, is the best way to acquire a feel for the place. You’ll be able to sample ten different dishes and determine which one is best for you.

The Halloumi cheese plate with figs and almonds is a must-try, and don’t forget to pair it with a glass of house-made Mediterranean wine! The main hall is modern and stylish, and it is always packed. Make a reservation ahead of time because it’s doubtful that you’ll be seated just outside the entryway.

The appetizers are fantastic, and you are welcome to serve them to your friends. Everything is delicious and fresh from the farm! You should try the organic blueberry soda on the menu! Vegans will find a whole side menu, and the Central’s wine list is excellent.

Sure, the prices are high, but the food is worth trying, especially during Summer Restaurant Week, when the menu is heavily discounted.

Georgetown’s Crown Jewel

The Crown Jewel Octopus from Georgetown is a delectable entrée that comes in a variety of Mediterranean recipes and has a smooth, buttery flavor that melts in your lips. Octopus can be eaten in a variety of ways, including grilled octopus, spaghetti, stews, and salads.

A comprehensive culinary tour of Washington would be incomplete without a trip at 1789 on 36th Street. This is a classic American restaurant with a lot of history and treasures from bygone ages.

The restaurant has a 5-star rating thanks to dishes like Scandinavian Halibut and Charred Spanish Octopus. Made with jumbo lump crab meat and topped with artisanal mayonnaise, Old Bay flavor, Dijon mustard, parsley, and saltine crackers, the crab cakes are pretty tasty.

This restaurant provides delectable eggnog crème brulee that will make you fall in love at first bite. Although the prices are a tad on the expensive side, you get what you pay for: excellent service and some of Georgetown’s greatest cuisine.

Brooklyn Brings the Heat with Ugly Baby

“Next time you come back you can handle it even spicier,” our server said with a smile, as he dropped off the check. My husband’s eyes widened, and he exhaled audibly as a single tear rolled down his cherry-red left cheek; conveying that this would not be true.

Ugly Baby is an acclaimed Thai restaurant in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. The name stems from a Thai superstition that evil spirits only want to harm attractive children and thereby will leave the ugly ones alone. It is around the corner from Other Half, one of the hippest craft breweries in Brooklyn- if not all of New York.

The restaurant is helmed by Sirichai Sreparplarn, a Bangkok native who has racked up cooking accolades stateside, including #3 on the “Best New American Restaurant 2018” list from Bon Appetit. He is known for authentic Thai dishes from the north and south that often can’t be found at any other Thai restaurant in the city. You’ll never see spring rolls or pad thai here. Sreparplan also doesn’t care if you can’t stand the heat- he unapologetically makes the dishes without any modifications.

The rap music, construction-paper menus, and the cartoon colors worn by the chef and staff made it immediately obvious that this is an unambiguously cool Brooklyn restaurant. The 24-seat restaurant was around a 45-minute wait when we arrived at 6 pm.

During our wait, we walked around the neighborhood. We observed the long line outside in 35-degree weather for Lucali, often touted as the best pizza in all of New York. In this part of Brooklyn, it is an act of reverence to patiently wait in line for your food. We returned to Ugly Baby and awkwardly stood against the technicolor-painted wall directly behind the diners. We hungrily eyed their dishes, salivating, urging them to settle up with our eyes.

When we sat down one hour after putting our names down, we realized we truly were in uncharted territory. The menu explained in only the vaguest sense what the dishes would entail, which gave me a thrill. We were in for an entirely new experience.

We explained to our server that I love spicy food, but my husband can only handle medium spicy dishes at best. During our 10 years together, he only recently stopped ordering mild when given a spice option. Our server pointed out three dishes, offering a range of spices, that we should share. 

Brooklyn Brings the Heat with Ugly Baby

When we agreed with his suggestions and ordered his recommended dishes he smiled and asked, “Are you sure?” before he reminded us how spicy everything can be. I hesitated, knowing I would be thrilled, but wondering if my husband needed to sign a waiver.

Our server then reminded us that we “Waited so long to get in here and now we needed to live in the moment”. Taking a server’s suggestions can often feel like the trust game. This felt like he was not about to catch us, but that we would enjoy the fall.

The wine, beer, and cider offerings were esoteric in an approachable way. I was excited to see some fun sweet wines available by the bottle. Chilled off-dry wine is the perfect pairing to a spicy dish, effectively slowing the burn.

Complicated table Tetris was the only way we were able to keep three dishes and our drinks on the small table when the dishes arrived. Our favorite of the night was Kao Tod Nam Klook, a dish consisting of crispy curried rice, pork skin, peanut, and ginger with a side of lettuce wraps. The layers of soft and crunchy textures and bold flavors of fresh lime juice, chillis, and fish sauce were transcendent.

The spiciest dish we ordered was Kanom Jean Kiew Warn with rice vermicelli, spicy chicken green curry, & fresh bird eye chillis. It was pungent, herbaceous, and brutally spicy. I felt like a fire-breathing dragon eating it. Our server placed a bowl of refreshing, chilled cucumbers on our table, sensing we needed a reprieve.

We also ordered a northern Thai dish made with spareribs and a dry red curry paste. The meat was richly flavored, falling off the bone. We ate these with our hands, silently reminding ourselves to scrub our hands with soap before touching our faces or eyes.

As the evening wore on the wait ballooned to two hours for those who arrived after us. This likely won’t be your experience, though. In response to the pandemic Ugly Baby now offers reservations, takeout, and delivery.

Overall, Ugly Baby lives up to the hype and unabashedly serves delicious, spicy Thai food. So Brooklyn spice-lovers rejoice: Ugly Baby will set your tastebuds on fire. And if you can’t stand the heat then someone else is always willing to take your seat.

Hey there all food lovers.

There is another month and an amazing magazine, which has full of interesting subjects. We are on total health this month including healthy foods and their impacts into our lives, anti-anxiety and anti-sadness foods.

Everyone has a side of health craziness, right? We all try to find healthy /balanced diet in our lives by eating vegetables, meat, fish, fruit and adding some supplements on the top of them. It is not all about being fit anymore. It is also about beauty, ageing, glowing, and looking young or getting old gracefully. So are we really eating the right foods for aforementioned? Do not worry, as you will be finding the answers in this month’s issue.

The definition of Gastronomy is “the practice or art of choosing, cooking, and eating good food.”  Yes, definitely it is an art. I have occasionally thought of why there are no artists who have published a cookbook? Well I was totally wrong. Now, listen up guys, this is a something new that I have learned from one of our articles. There are actually some cookbooks by amazing artists such as Vincent Price, Dali, and Monet. Around ~4 months ago, I had to go completely sober after a doctor told me I’d end up in a wheelchair in about a year if I didn’t quit everything entirely. As it turns out, alcohol triggers a rare disease I have that causes serious complications when combined with stress and exposure to sunlight. 

So, no cigarettes, no party favors, and no booze became my new status quo. (Sorry, I like to walk too much to keep doing wine reviews.)  This has led me to walk down a path of new mocktails that are hitting restaurants and resorts across the board. To my surprise, many restaurants and brands are starting to cater to people who don’t drink.

Grown-Up Soda Mixers

So, GUS unveiled a series of new soda mixers that are designed to make mixing cocktails easier than ever before. The thing is, these mixers are amazing to drink on their own—and not in the cloyingly sweet way that the margarita mixes from the 90s were. (Sorry Mr. T’s!)

Personally, I’ve gotten addicted to the taste of their Mojito mixer. It literally tastes just like a virgin mojito made at an upscale cocktail bar. I’m all for it.

My first introduction to Seedlip was via a luxury magazine article that I read a long time ago, featuring the owner of the company and how he brought his canned mocktails to the public. I then had the pleasure of trying Seedlip at Crystal Springs Resort on my honeymoon. 

Seedlip is amazing. If you are a fan of herbal, grassy, and slightly fruity drinks, you will love their goods. It really does taste like an artisan cocktail. You can also jazz them up with the soda of your choice, if you’re so inclined.

This is a brand that takes cocktails to a new level. Rather than focus on a buzz from alcohol, this mocktail brand focuses on delivering a crisp, light flavor that is packed with soothing hemp and adaptogen ingredients. 

Bottom line, this is a brand that features very lightly flavored drinks that taste good and help you feel good. Best part? No alcohol required, and it’ll chill you right the heck out.

You’re done when they serve you a plate of Black Forests of Nice (the best cherry ice cream you’ve ever had)! Sure, the costs are exorbitant, but Providence is more than simply a fine dining establishment; it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Lamb – Get Your Foot in the Door

Lamb flesh is tenderer and more nutritious than any other meat, and it has a distinctly gamey flavour. It’s not quite as solid as beef, but it’s more chewy than chicken.
