A warm and delicious apple pie recipe made from scratch by yours truly!

Months ago, I had bushels and bushels of apples that we could not eat fast enough! So, I sought to make an apple pie from scratch. When I looked for recipes online, I often found that they required store-bought pie crusts. This baffled me because by using store-bought crust, it is no longer a “made from scratch” pie. So, I did what I should have done in the first place, I asked my grandma! She then gave me tips on pie crust and other aspects of creating a pie recipe. The following is what I finally was able to come up with and the result is delicious!

Apple Pie completely from scratch!

Ingredients for pie crust
  • 2 ½ cup flour
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 cup butter
  • ⅓ cup cold water (add more if needed, up to 1 cup likely)
Ingredients for pie filling
  • Five or six good-sized apples (apples of your choice, I used Snapdragon)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons cinnamon powder
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon butter
Apple Pie
Instructions for pie crust
  1.  Preheat your oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit
  2. Cut butter into cubes and place them in a glass mixing bowl
  3. Add flour, salt, and baking powder to the butter in the mixing bowl
  4. Blend ingredients
  5. Slowly add water to the blending ingredients, starting with ⅓ cup cold water
  6. Continue to add cold water (likely up to 1 cup) until dough ball forms
  7. Remove dough ball from mixing bowl and separate into two even pieces
  8. Roll one dough ball out until it evenly covers the pie dish, with a little overhang
  9. Place dough on a large plate and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes
  10. Repeat for dough ball number two
  11. Grease pie dish with butter or nonstick cooking spray
  12. Once dough is chilled, place dough piece number one on the bottom of the pie dish to fit
  13. Add filling to the top of dough piece number one
  14. Top filling with dough piece number two
  15. Pinch or fold ends all the way around the pie dish to enclose ingredients
  16. Add ventilation slits in the top dough
  17. Rub top dough piece with egg wash
  18. Bake at 425 degrees Fahrenheit for 50 minutes to 1 hour
Apple Pie
Instructions for pie filling
  1. Have the oven preheated to 425 degrees Fahrenheit and dough pieces rolled out and chilling
  2. While dough pieces are chilling in the refrigerator, prepare filling
  3. Wash, peel, and slice each of the apples you choose to use for your pie filling (an apple slicer would make slices even)
  4. Place apple slices into a large mixing bowl
  5. In a separate bowl, combine flour, sugar, and cinnamon
  6. Coat the apple slices with the sugar mixture, stirring in-between coatings to make sure they are evenly coated
  7. Continue shaking mixture over apples and stirring until sugar mixture is gone
  8. Once all of the apples are evenly coated in the sugar mixture, prepare the bottom layer of pie crust with dough piece number one
  9. Pour apple mixture over dough piece number one
  10. Slice thin layers of cold butter and place around the inner edge of crust/apple mixture
  11. Top with dough piece number two, pinching the edges together all the way around the pie dish
  12. Cut ventilation slits into the top of dough piece number two
  13. Rub with egg wash
  14. Bake at 425 for about an hour or until apples are tender and crust is golden brown
Apple Pie

The end result should be a beautiful apple pie (similar to the one pictured above) that has filled your home with an aroma every baker yearns for! This pie recipe takes a good chunk of the day to make between getting the dough just right, thinking it, preparing and mixing the filling and finally the baking but I have to say that it is well worth it! Every time I make this apple pie recipe people go nuts for it and beg for more!
